Magherafelt Community Quilting project in collaboration with the STEPS project
Posted on April 24, 2019
Milesian Manor have formed yet another new community partnership. We have been chosen to host the Magherafelt Community Quilting project in collaboration with the STEPS project.
Our resident Lita asked Chris Pollock from STEPS why we had chosen Milesian Manor, he said,
"I have spoken with members from the local community who have been involved with other projects which you have facilitated, each group spoke of such a positive experience both with the lifestyle team and with the residents. Your ethos is unique and forward thinking. You were the perfect choice'
Members from the Mid-Ulster Crafting Collective, The Women's Institute and ladies from the Syrian Refugee Community will join our residents and staff on Wednesday evenings 7:00pm-9:00pm to create a historical Community Quilt. This will be facilitated by a local lady from the Mid-Ulster area; Rosemary, who is an expert quilter and who has facilitated many of the original Peace quilting projects hosted by Wave Trauma Centre.
Each person will design and create their own square based on their personal story. Each square will then be made into a quilt. The completed project will then be placed on public display for the month of July in The Bridewell suite, Magherafelt after which it will be returned to Milesian Manor for permanent display.
We are delighted to have been chosen to be a part of this prestigious project and that our residents and staff have the opportunity to be a part of this historical piece of work.
Even though we are at the early stages it is wonderful to see new friendships being formed, especially with the ladies from the Syrian refugee community who are so honoured to be part of this project. We are equally honoured to hear their experiences and their shared stories and welcome them with open arms into our community.
